Maintaining Lock Performance
Changes in Everyday Lock Operation Should Not Be Ignored
Repeated use can gradually affect keys, cylinders,
latches, bolts, handles, hinges, and related door
components. Moisture, debris, temperature changes, and
movement within a door frame may also influence how
smoothly the locking system functions.
Forcing a key that has become difficult to turn can
increase the possibility of bending or breaking it.
Additional pressure may also damage internal lock parts.
Inspecting the mechanism first provides a better basis
for deciding whether adjustment, maintenance, repair, or
replacement is required.
Choosing the Appropriate Service
Repair, Rekey, Adjust, or Replace
Some locks can remain in service after repair or
adjustment. Rekeying can change which keys operate
compatible hardware without replacing the complete
mechanism. If components are badly worn or damaged,
replacing the affected hardware may provide a more
practical solution.
